Working Principle of Pattern Wheels in Warp Knitting Machines

1.Core Function

Pattern wheels (also called chain wheels) are the mechanical programmers that control guide bar movements to create fabric patterns. They convert rotary motion into precise lateral guide bar displacements.

2.Key Components

-Pattern wheel disc: Steel disc with precisely machined grooves

-Pattern links/buttons: Interchangeable elements that determine movement sequence

-Drive mechanism: Connects to main shaft via gear system

-Follower assembly: Transfers wheel motion to guide bars

3.Working Process

-Pattern encoding:

Links/buttons are arranged on the wheel to create specific movement patterns

Each link corresponds to 1-2 machine courses

-Motion transmission:

Wheel rotates synchronously with main shaft (typically 1:1 or 1:2 ratio)

Follower roller tracks the contour, converting rotation to linear motion

-Guide bar control:

Precise lateral displacements (0.5-5mm) are transmitted to guide bars

  Movement sequence determines overlap/underlap patterns

4.Technical Specifications

- Diameter: 150-400mm (machine dependent)

- Material: Case-hardened steel (58-62 HRC)

- Position accuracy: ±0.01mm

- Maximum speed: Compatible with 2500rpm machines

- Standard capacity: 48-144 links per wheel

5.Pattern Capabilities

- Basic geometric patterns (mesh, satin)

- Complex jacquard-like designs (with multiple wheels)

- Quick pattern change (15-30 minutes)

- Repeat lengths up to 240 courses

6.Modern Advancements

- Hybrid electronic-mechanical systems

- Quick-change wheel systems

- Laser-etched position markers

- Wear-resistant coatings (DLC/TiN)

- Integrated position sensors

Maintenance requires:

- Weekly cleaning of grooves

- Monthly lubrication

- Link inspection every 500 hours

- Wheel runout verification quarterly

Note: Modern machines increasingly use electronic pattern systems, but mechanical pattern wheels remain popular for their reliability in standard fabrics.
